Laura Nyro - And When I Die

1st 「More Than a New Discovery」 (67) から " And When I Die " を私訳。彼女が19歳の頃にリリースされたこのアルバムを聴くと、演奏スタイル(テクニックよりも情感優先)は既にこの時点で完成されていたように思えます。彼女の楽曲はそのスタイルから齎される曲調の変化やジャズを連想させる即興的、ライヴ感が特徴と言えますが、歌詞の世界も個性的。

今回私訳したのは " And When I Die " 。ここには彼女の死生観が少しコミカルに綴られているのだけど、不思議に思うのがこの年代のキリスト教圏の人が

And when I die and when I'm gone,
there'll be one child born and a world to carry on, to carry on.

･･のような感覚を持っていたということ(現代では不思議に思わないけど)。
個人的なイメージではキリスト教だと、まず最初に原罪というものがあり、そして神様から与えられたものに対して悪行を働けば地獄に行くとか善行を積めば天国に召されるという一方通行的なものだけど、この歌詞に書かれているものには東洋思想に近いものが感じられ、輪廻転生を思わせる記述があるのが興味深い。

ちょっと気になったので調べてみると、元々キリスト教に輪廻転生　はあったらしいのですが、大昔にその部分の記述が削除されたらしいです。また60年代には禅ブームがアメリカで起こり、東洋思想への関心が高まっていた　そうですね。

私が存在している限り自由にさせて下さい

生に求めるのは、鎖で繋がないでということ
