3rd「Sin after Sin」(77)から " Diamonds and Rust " を私訳。ジョーン・バエズがヒットさせたアルバム「Diamonds & Rust」(75)に収録されていたこの曲をジューダス・プリーストがカヴァー。彼等がカヴァー曲を発表したのはこれが初めてだけどうまく自分達の音にしているし、この時期のロブのハイトーン・ボイスは実に伸びやかでジューダスの他のアルバムの彼の声よりもどこか優しい感じがします。歌詞を訳すまでは曲のタイトルが意味するところが分からなかったけど、今回訳してみると「悲しい物語」がありました。

歌詞を考える
太郎です。この曲はタイトルの意味がなかなか掴みづらく悩んでおりました。
Diamonds and Rust
ダイヤモンドと錆
この部分が指しているのは「指輪」。ダイヤモンドはそのままダイヤモンドで、Rust(錆)、これは指輪の土台のことでしょう。つまりダイヤモンドは年月が経てもその輝きは失われないけれど、土台はどんどん酸化して錆びていってしまう。例えると「ダイヤモンド」＝「相手への気持ち」はそのままだけど、「(指輪の台に浮かぶ)錆」＝「どれだけの月日が経ったのか」＝「主人公の自責の念の深さ」なのだと思います。
