Primus - Tommy The Cat
プライマスの 2nd「Sailing the Seas of Cheese」(91) から " Tommy The Cat " を私訳。この曲には (一部分だけ) ボーカルでトム・ウェイツが参加。彼独特のしゃがれ声が白黒の実写とアニメが組み合わされたPVによく似合っていますね。ただプライマスのベース兼ボーカルのレス・クレイプール、トム・ウェイツ共に喋りが早すぎるから、歌詞を目で追うのは結構難しいかも知れません･･･。
91年にこのアルバムでメジャー・デビューした彼等を巷では「変態バンド」と呼ばれていますが、その理由の大半はプライマスの演奏が上手すぎるところでしょうか。あとはどんなジャンルの音でも吸収する柔軟性と雑食性。そしてそこから表現される音の多様さ、混沌さも含まれていると思います。

Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter may have nestled its way into his mighty throat.
そう言い終えたトミー・ザ・キャットは、溢れんばかりに口の中に込み上げていた涎を強靭な喉の奥へと飲み下してスッキリとさせた
Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down the cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine.
ふと彼は、嘗て素晴らしい性能を誇ったであろう装置の剥き出しになった足の付け根からジッとこちらを見つめている とてつもなく太った野ネズミと目が合った
Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator.
その都会の捕食者は驚くべきことに何も身につけていなかったが
Tommy the cat had many a story to tell,
トミー・ザ・キャットは彼に物語を話し始めた
But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did.
でも彼がそういうことをするのは滅多にないことなのだ
"She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit.
「あるメス猫が温かいビスケットから滴るバターのように裏通りをやって来た
The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the oldest of Tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days.
彼女の香りが周囲に漂い出すと、その甘くて強烈な香りは路地に居座る猫共の鼻をくすぐり、その界隈を縄張りとしているタイガースをも魅了したんだよ
The sight was beyond belief.
すると次の瞬間、信じられないものが目に映ったんだ
Many a head snapped for double - even triple - takes as this vivacious feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway where the most virile of the young tabbys were known to hang out.
大勢のオス猫がメス猫から漂う香りに釣られて彼女の周囲に集まったかと思うと頭を寄せ合って三角形に取り囲み、それが二重、三重の輪を作っていたのさ。おまけに裏通りで一番若いタビィが常に彼女の傍をうろついてやがる
"They hung in droves. Such a multitude of masculinity could only be found in one place..."
「彼等は路地のパイプにぶらさがっているけど、この集団の中に気骨のある男を見つけられるかしら...」
And that was O'malley's Alley.
そんな物思いに耽る彼女が気がつくとオマリーの店がある路地にいた
The air was thick with cat calls
空には絶え間なく猫の鳴き声が響いていたが
(no pun intended),
(ヤツ等のアソコと同じで弱々しいがな）
But not even a muscle in her neck did twitch as she sauntered up into the heart of the alley.
彼女が路地のド真ん中を歩いていても自分の首筋の毛がふわりと逆立つことは、ただの一度もなかったらしいぜ
She knew what she wanted.
彼女には自分が何を望んでいるか分かっていたのさ
She was lookin' for that stud bull, the he cat.
盛りがついたオス猫、本物のオスを探しているということをな
