「Man in Black」(73) から " Man in Black " を私訳。
ジョニー・キャッシュの魅力って俯瞰した視点と自立した意見を歌詞に綴るところが良いし、その多くにレクイエムの要素を含ませているところが独特。でもそういうものがどこから来るのかというと、彼が幼少の頃に兄を失ったことに端を発しているんじゃないかと思えて仕方ない。彼が事故で兄を失った時、父親が言ったのが「悪魔はできる子のほうを奪った」というもので、当時キャッシュは12歳。その言葉の意味が分かる年齢だった。
その事実が彼の中に暗い影を落とし続けたのは明らかで、後に彼がミュージシャンとなった時、歌詞の一部に気持ちを投影するのは必然と云えるものだった。結果として彼は自分と同じように何らかの烙印を押された者に対する理解者の存在、それを示したかったのかも知れない。
