Nina Simone - Rags And Old Iron

ニーナ・シモンのアルバム「Forbidden Fruit」（61）から " Rags and Old Iron " を私訳。曲はノーマン・カーティス、オスカー・ブラウン・ジュニアによって書かれています。今回訳すにあたって参考にしたのは浅川マキのアルバム「MAKI VI」(1970) に収録されていたバージョンですが、この曲をカバーされている方は結構いるみたいですね。中でも惹かれたのがノーマ・ウォータソンのカバー(1996) とウォーラスのカバー(1970) が良かった。そのふたつのバージョンは記事末尾に貼り付けてありますので、もし良ければ聴き比べてみてください。

Norma Waterson - Rags and Old Iron (1996)

イギリスのフォーク、トラッド界では名家として知られる“Waterson Family　 ”（トラッド・ボーカル・グループ）の母ノーマ・ウォータソンによるカバー。無伴奏シンギング＆ハーモニー・コーラス・スタイルを基本とするオーセンティックなファミリー・グループで、伝承曲などもよく歌っているそうです。個人的にこの " Rags and Old Iron "は、ノーマ・ウォータソンの歌う雰囲気が一番好み。

WALRUS - Rags and Old Iron / Blind Man / Roadside (1970)

60年代後半、ロックとジャズを融合させるためのアイデアを思い付いたベース奏者の Steve Hawthson はロンドン周辺でメンバーを募り、WALRUS を結成しました。（しかしメンバーは流動的でよく入れ替わった･･･）
